The Creative Process
The Creative Development

For the fourth straight year we wrote and designed the annual campaign to raise funds for the Upper Makefield Fire Company. The campaign development includes the creative concept, messaging, copywriting, and design, applied to the layout of a trifold mailer. With the goal of funds for the continual operation of the fire company, the messaging and writing establishes the importance of the fire company to the community, without cliches or overstated bravado. The campaign design direction is strong photography and developing the messaging into a graphic element to work with the photo as one, making the typography, composition, and layout essential.

The choice of typefaces reflects the tone and feel of the messaging, as does the photo. In the development of the campaign, the messaging is always the starting point of the creative direction.

Within the creative development: Starting the creative process, words and imagery, establishing the tone and feel of the messaging and imagery, the writing and the design are done together, as part of the initial creative process, with statements written out to create a feel for what the messaging will say and how it will be said. Photos are chosen from stock photos, with a focus on composition, style, feel, and most importantly how the photo will reflect and work with the messaging. Paying attention to the tone and feel of both the message and photography.

Once 3-5 written concepts are developed the layout process begins, working with each of the statements, the photos, color palettes, and the typefaces that will best convey the messaging and writing. 5-7 initial designs are presented, with the client then choosing the design, which is then eventually developed into what will be the printed campaign. +View the project.

While a project development is different for the type of assignment, project goals, the medium, and the components in the project, the constant remains the process and the development of the creative. The concept development, the writing, and the design all work together as part of the whole.
